Bloodwood, also commonly known as Cardinal Wood, due to its beautiful, rich rose color. As it ages, the color deepens. Bloodwood is one of the finest of the "Red" colored exotic woods and is extremely colorfast. The wood is extremely dense, with a tight, fine grain. When quarter sawn, it has a vibrant shimmer that is often mixed with stripes of golden hues. Vibrant and beautiful are the most common expressions when it has been finished. A lacquer finish helps to preserve its color more than other finishes.
Bloodwood machines very well, but due to its density, it will dull blades and cutters quickly, so light cuts are always a good idea when machining. It sands wonderfully, to a super smooth and glossy surface. One of the most beautiful of all exotics and worthy of inclusion in the finest projects.
